We checked in with Maccabi Haifa power forward Ike Ofoegbu, who is in Atlanta right now preparing for the new season.
Hi Ike, how has the rehab process been going?
Rehab is always a tough time. However, I am fortunate that my rehab process is going great! God is good for seeing me through this process.
Describe what is was like playing for Maccabi Haifa this past season and did it meet all your expectations?
It is an honor playing for Maccabi Haifa! It’s a great organization, starting from the top to the bottom. The best owner I’ve ever been a part of, great guy in and out of basketball. Great fans, best in the league! The staff is very good and genuine people. My teammates were a special good group of guys. It felt more like a family than a job. It met my expectations as it’s really organized and a prestigious organization.
How disappointed were you having to watch the second half of the season from the sidelines?
It was tough, one of the hardest things I had to deal with in my career. Not able to play with my bros was hard, especially the kind of team we had and how high are expectations of winning a championship were.
I know you watched the Finals. How eager were you to be out there to try and help the team win the title?
Yea I did. I watched every playoff game and would call the guys after the games. I was really itching to get out there. Especially knowing I would have really helped them win another title.
What was one of your favorite memories from last season?
I had more than just one favorite memory. Just hanging with the guys everyday was special, traveling playing against the NBA teams, traveling playing in the Eurocup, hitting the game winner tip-in a Eurocup game. They were all special
Tell us something behind the scenes from last year that the fans would appreciate
We were all a bunch of jokers on the team. We were really silly off the court, a bunch of pranksters. Some of the videos of our silliness is on my instagram @ikeouknow
What were your thoughts about the Israeli League and what are your expectations for the team and personally for this season.
I like the Israeli league, it’s a great league. My expectation are the same as last year. Winning a championship! I know we lost great players from this past season, but the group of guys we have coming in are more than capable of bringing a title back to Haifa.
We signed two players (Rene and Brody), whom you played with in Mexico and won a title together. How excited are you to be reunited with them?
I’m very excited, they are great players on the court, but even better guys off the court.
What’s your message to the Maccabi Haifa fans this season?
Get ready for a great season this year!!
