Maccabi Hunter Haifa dropped to 1-4 in the preseason after falling 74-72 to Maccabi Ashdod on Thursday night on the road in a tightly contested game. Amit Simhon paced the Greens with 20 points, while John DiBartolomeo added 12 points in the defeat.
Simhon was the first player to score from the line after four minutes in the game. Ashdod threw down two dunks, Rahimi called a time out. Jake Cohen (13 points), who was dominant for the locals, hit two from the line to give Ashdod a 19-18 lead. At the beginning of the second quarter, DiBartolomeo started to get hot from downtown, but Noam Laish from Ashdod countered with his own from deep, to give the Yellows a 7 point lead. Maccabi woke up as Koperberg, Simhon and Perez help knot the score at 37-37 at the break.
Mitchell, who suffered early foul trouble, started in the second half and scored from the foul line, but the referees called him for his fourth foul which sent him back to the bench. The game stayed close as Ashdod led 56-55 at the end of the quarter. The Yellows took a 6 points advantage, but Perez was right on time with an important shot from beyond the arc to keep the Greens alive. A minute left in regulation, Haifa led by 2, but Ashdod regained the lead at the end. In the last possession, DiBartolomeo turned over the ball as Ashdod held on for a 74-72 win.
