Maccabi Bazan Haifa will host Hapoel Gilboa/Galil in the State Cup quarterfinals tomorrow (Sunday) at 7:45pm at Romema. Both teams advanced to this stage after winning the Round of 16 with Maccabi Bazan Haifa defeating Holon 99-87 on Thursday and Gilboa/Galil edging Hod Hasharon 76-75 in a dramatic game.
Maccabi Bazan Haifa will face Gilboa/Galil, after a two game win streak over Jerusalem in the league, and in the State cup against Holon. It seems that the personnel changes with the signing Moran Roth, Chanan Colman and Will Graves has boosted the team’s confidence on the offensive end. There is a stark contrast in points scored when Maccabi Haifa wins versus in losses. Haifa is scoring 85.5 points in victories comparing to only 72.6 points in losses.
Last game, several players shined in the victory over Holon, including Rene Rougeau, who has been on a tear of late, almost notching a triple-Double on Thursday with 20 points, 10 rebounds and 8 assists. Moran Roth also had a very solid game against Holon, scoring 16 points and 7 assists in 27 minutes. Alex Chubrevich impressed in the paint, recording a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
“We’re starting to play with a lot of confidence as a team and it shows,” Chubrevich said prior to Sunday’s game. “It also helps that we are playing in front of our home fans, who are our sixth man. We want to continue our strong play against Gilboa Galil as we try and advance to the Final Four.”
Last time Maccabi faced Gilboa/Galil in the State Cup was in the 2008-09 season, with the Greens making it all the way to the Finals against Hapoel Holon, which snatched the title after a buzzer-beater 3-pointer. The Greens defeated Gilboa/Galil that season 75-73 in the round of 16. In that game, the MVP was Davon Jefferson, who tallied 19 points.
The Reds Coach Barak Peleg, comes to the game after a tough win last round against Hod Hasharon from the second division. Last time the Reds came to Romema the game lasted for 55 minutes after a 3OT thriller with Maccabi Bazan Haifa puling out a 98-96 victory. The Reds’ power forward, Jeremiah Wilson scored 18 points and 5 rebounds and is the most efficient player of Gilboa/Galil with an average 16.1 VAL in the league. Another player who had a great game is the Israeli Oded Brandwin who had 17 points and 9 assists. Wayne Chism of Galil is averaging 10.2 points and 7.6 rebounds in the league. Just like Maccabi, the guests are rank high in Blocks (3.5) and offensive rebounds (13.9) and have the same record of 5-8 in the league.
