Maccabi Bazan Haifa tops Rishon Lezion, holds on for first preseason victory

The Greens won their first preseason game as they held on for a 65-61 victory over Rishon despite being held without a field goal through the first nine minutes of the final quarter.  The Greens’ Dagan Yivzori notched a team-high 13 points, followed by Demontez Stitt who recorded   as Haifa started with Demontez Stitt, Dagan Yivzori, Rene Rougeau, Jeff Allen and Alex Chubrevich. Haifa jumped out to a 10-4 lead with four quick points from Rene Rougeau and a three-pointer by Dagan Yizori. The Greens finished the quarter on a 7-0 run to take a 21-9 advantage over Rishon.

Haifa continued to push the tempo with a smooth jumper by forward Hector Hernandez as they stretched their to lead to 27-11. Haifa did a nice job controlling the offensive boards as Stitt made a putback to give Haifa a 33-21 lead, before former Haifa guard Larry O’Bannon nailed a three-pointer to tighten the score at 33-24. Rishon closed the gap in the final minutes as Haifa went into the locker room leading 35-27.  Stitt led Haifa with 8 points in the first half followed by Rene Rougeau who registered 7 points and Dagan Yivzori dropped in 6 points.

In the second half, the Greens ran out their starting five as Rougeau showed his defensive prowess with a clean block on former Haifa center Jeremis Smith.  A Dagan Yivzori bucket was answered with a Larry O’Bannon three-pointer as the Greens maintained a 39-30 lead at the 6:22 mark.  Rishon creeped back within 6 points at 42-36, but the Greens’ Stitt attacked the basket and scored on a goal tending call.  The Greens went on a 15-7 run as they got hot from beyond the arc, beginning with Brody Angley, who nailed his first three-pointer, followed by Yivzori’s third long distance shot and Liraz Ariely joined the action with his first three, extended the Haifa advantage to 57-43. Haifa would finish the third quarter leading 59-44 over Rishon Lezion.

Rishon went on a 16-1 run to tie the score at 60-60 with two and half minutes left in the game. Both teams had to be separated midway through the quarter after a hard foul by Alex Chubrevich on Jeremis Smith.  Haifa was held without a field goal for almost the entire quarter, before Jeff Allen converted on a three-point play to put Haifa up 63-60 with 40.5 seconds remaining in the game.  Jeff Allen sealed the game with another layup as Haifa won their first game in the preseason 65-61.
