The Maccabi Haifa Professional Basketball Club announced the signing of Venezuelan point guard Gregory Vargas for the 2019-20 Season.
Vargas, 33, returns to Maccabi Haifa for the third time, having played for the club in the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons. In addition to being named an all-star in both of his previous stints, Vargas was named the 2016-17 Defensive Player of the Year while guiding Maccabi Haifa to their 4th Final Four appearance.
“We are thrilled to have a proven winner and leader like Gregory Vargas back in a Maccabi Haifa uniform,” said Team Owner, Jeffrey Rosen.
“The name of Gregory Vargas speaks for itself, one of the best players in Israel over the last few seasons,” said Head Coach, Daniel Seoane. “He is a floor general, loves Haifa, and Haifa loves him.”
Vargas, a native of Venezuela, is one of the most accomplished players on the international circuit, having won 8 league titles over the course of his career. While most of his time has been spent playing in Latin America with teams from Venezuela, Mexico, and Puerto Rico, he has also played overseas in France’s ProA and Spain’s Liga Endesa.
In addition to his club success, Vargas has also garnered significant achievements as a member of the Venezuela national basketball team, winning a gold medal at the 2015 FIBA AmeriCup and participating in the 2016 Olympics.
