The Maccabi Hunter Haifa professional basketball team of the Israeli Super League today announced that they have named Barak Peleg as head coach of Maccabi Hunter Haifa. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“Barak personifies the fighting spirit as a coach and a leader that our team needs,” said Jeff Rosen, Owner, Maccabi Hunter Haifa. “Our backs are against the wall, and Barak will instill tenacity, motivation, and fight in these last seven games.”
“I received a call from Maccabi Haifa to come and coach the last month of the season. I love the challenge, despite the difficult situation,” said Peleg. “I believe that I have the ability to unite them. In addition, my close relationship with Tomer helped me in my decision.”
Peleg, 45, has served as head coach of Maccabi Ra’anana of Israel’s Second Division for the past two seasons (2016-18), guiding the team to an 18-8 record this season. He was named 2016-17 Eurobasket.com National League Coach of the Year after leading Macabbi Ra’anana to an 18-8 record and a first-place finish.
Prior to his tenure in Ra’anana, Peleg served as head coach of Gilboa/Galil for 22 games during the 2014-15 season. He spent three seasons (2011-14) as an assistant coach of Gilboa/Galil, where he helped guide the team to back-to-back Balkan League championships.
“Barak is a great choice to lead our team,” said assistant coach Tomer Shteinhaur. “I’ve known Barak for many years, both as a player and as my friend. He will make a difference.”
“We are convinced that Barak is the right coach to help us fight to stay in the first division,” said Assaf Rozenblatt, CEO, Maccabi Hunter Haifa.
Over the course of 14 seasons in the Israel Premier League, Peleg appeared in 326 regular season contests as a small forward, where he totaled 2,876 career points.
