Greens collapse in fourth quarter, three-game win streak snapped
Maccabi Hunter Haifa suffered a frustrating 73-66 defeat to Gilboa/Galil on Monday night at Gan Ner, snapping Maccabi’s three-game winning streak.
The Greens had a woeful shooting night from beyond the arc, connecting on just 3-of-25 attempts (12 percent). But, Maccabi still led by 7 points, 64-58, with just under four minutes left in regulation after Guni Israeli netted Haifa’s final 3-pointer. Questionable decisions doomed Haifa down the stretch as Gilboa/Galil rallied back with a 15-2 run to record their third straight win.
Head Coach Offer Rahimi was ejected towards the end of the third quarter after picking up his second technical foul. Assistant Coach Tomer Shteinhaur took over the sideline in Rahimi’s absence.
“We lost control at the end, and we made some bad decisions,” said Shteinhaur. “We took too many shots from outside the entire game, and with that kind of bad [three-point shooting] percentage — you can’t win the game.”
Maccabi was paced by forwards Oz Blayzer (6 rebounds) and Brandon Bowman (5 rebounds) who scored 15 points apiece. Reggie Buckner recorded 12 points on 4-of-11 shooting and snared 7 rebounds. Willy Workman pulled down a game-high 9 boards while chipping in 6 points. Guni Israeli notched 8 points and Frederic Bourdillon tallied 6 points and 4 rebounds. Angel Rodriguez struggled from the field, scoring 4 points on 2-of-12 shooting, 6 rebounds and 4 assists.
Gilboa/Galil was lifted by Zach LeDay’s game-high 20 points and 12 rebounds as well as D’Angelo Harrison’s 16 points along with 4 assists. Israelis Ezequiel Skverer (4 assists) and Joaquin Szuchman (7 rebounds) each scored 8 points.
The game was tightly contested throughout with neither team leading by more than 8 points. The Greens grabbed a four-point advantage at the half, 36-32, but relinquished the lead to Gilboa/Galil at the end the third frame, trailing 52-50.
The fourth quarter started off promising for the Greens as Buckner and Israeli converted on three-point plays to reclaim a 56-54 lead. Workman scored on a floater and Israeli knocked down the triple to extend the score 64-58 to Haifa at the 3:47 mark. Bowman picked up his fifth foul on a 3-point attempt by Harrison, who netted all three from the line. Gilboa/Galil tied the game at 64-64 after Skverer splashed in a 3-pointer. Buckner briefly gave Haifa a lead with a bucket inside, but Harrison tied the game again at 66-66. Tal Karpelesz buried a dagger trey to put Galil up 69-66. The Greens had no answers offensively in the final :45 seconds as they fell 73-66 to Gilboa/Galil — dropping to 4-6 on the season and 8th place in the standings.
